Things to consider while designing a bathroom.

No house can do without a bathroom. Nobody will argue if I say that the bathrooms are the most important rooms in a house. No person would like to use a dirty or dull bathroom everyday of their life. And bathrooms are a place where you get judged, because many people who visit you would use your bathrooms. It is also a place where you will not be judged and just be yourself because of the fact that, no one is watching you, and this notion gives you the confidence to be yourself, while disconnecting from the world and being alone with your thoughts.

It is an image used to describe how opposite bathrooms generally are for the readers of this blog 'Things to consider while designing a bathroom' on www.40x50.net to understand the concept better. 40x50 Designs and Constructions uses this image as an example for an ideal concept of a toilet and bathroom.

Contrary to the image shown, bathrooms are smaller spaces and normally have minimum ventilation.

1) Size of bathrooms:-

The bigger the bathroom is, the better it will look and feel. But, the fact that bathrooms are the most expensive area of a house, hit your plans like a juggernaut. Naturally, everybody wants to optimise the bathroom designs to make them fabulous and also budget friendly at the same time.

2) Bigger Windows and Mirrors:-

Bathrooms are generally small rooms and thus are darker and less ventilated. Though artificial lighting and an exhaust system will solve these problems, while designing, it will always be better to look for natural light and ventilation as they cannot be substituted. Sunlight kills bacteria and viruses which grow quickly in bathrooms because of dampness. Mirrors apart from serving their primary function, also gives an illusion of a bigger space and reflects light better to give a bright and spacious look to the bathrooms.

3) Selecting colors for your bathrooms:-

As said earlier, bathrooms are smaller spaces and normally have minimum ventilation. Using light colored tiles and paints will reflect more light and gives a spacious feel to the room. Small portions of contrasting colors could be used to get the desired aesthetic effect. A combination of grey, black, blue or brown with white can never go wrong.

4) Adding design and utility elements:-

Designs and styles keep changing and along with that, the utility and comfort also changes. Exploring options available and trying to include them, during the designing phase will do wonders to your bathrooms.

I will list some of the element that you should definitely think of:-

  • Glass cabin for shower areas.

  • Bath tubs.

  • Different closet types.

  • Washbasin and vanity counters.

  • Storage

  • Lighting and exhaust.

Deciding on the elements you want, analysing their cost and arranging these elements in the floor plan will give you a head start.

Most people start their day and end their day after a visit to the bathroom. Simply because of this, your bathroom has to be clean, pleasant and fabulous.

5) Elements that you can't do without:-

Apart from a toilet closet and a shower, your bathroom should have a wash basin and a storage for the things that you would be using in a bathroom. Proper ventilation is a must have and an exhaust will always come in handy. Readers should understand that an unclean and poorly ventilated bathroom could cause sickness and diseases. Good lighting will be a perk. Also it is good to talk to your contractor or engineer about the ideal slope needed to efficiently drain the bathroom floor.

6) Concept of bathroom varies from person to person:-

Most people gather ideas about bathrooms, while travelling. Different hotels or places have different styles, and some people want to inculcate these ideas into their bathrooms. So a designer should carefully and patiently listen to these ideas, and list out the pros and cons for the client to make a better decision. Designer should also explain the cost differences and changes in floor plan during the designing phase itself.
